Cheering someone up at work is an act of kindness that also promotes a healthier and happier work environment. Sometimes we don’t know what to say. Sometimes we just need the words. It’s not a lack of sincerity. We just need a fresh idea for what quotes and words of encouragement will inspire someone without sounding trite. Here are words an entrepreneur can use to help brighten someone’s spirits during tough times.

We want to help. We want to say the right thing. We want to make a positive difference for someone who is feeling down.
Sometimes we need reassurance that saying something like, “feel better soon,” doesn’t sound overused and insincere. It doesn’t.
As I always say, nothing is magic. We say, “I hope you feel better soon,” because we do. It’s as simple as that.
This article is simply about sharing a few words or ideas to brighten someone’s day.
The purpose heartfelt words:
We want to help if we can, and we want to acknowledge their feelings.
- be empathetic
- not butt in
- not assume
- not diagnose
And it’s fair to say the business purpose is also real:
- build self esteem
- solidify relationships
- create a supportive work environment
- boost everyone’s productivity
It’s not that the business purpose leads the reasoning, but no one comes back to work if an elephant caused by rudeness or insincerity in the room continues and puts you out of business. When we’re down the last thing we need is to feel worse or be undervalued.
A few words about productivity:
Balance is needed and so is common sense.
Remember that you are paid to work and so are they. Productivity does matter.
However support is what good people do. It takes a village to get through life – and build your business.
…and sometimes it takes a few inspirational quotes!
So seek the proper balance, but know in your heart (and brain):
- Gracious acts are an important part of our village.
- Success takes care of itself when you work together and do the right things.

Words and Quotes to inspire perseverance.
Take a moment to say:
- Thank you.
- Thank you for showing up today.
- Your life is upside down and yet you encourage Us.
- You’re the bravest person I know.

- I’m sorry all of this is happening.
- Your courage is inspirational.

“Courage is grace under pressure.” ~ Ernest Hemingway

How to say it:
- Simply say it in person as you walk by.
- Look at them even if they can’t raise their eyes and make eye contact.
- Don’t stare and make them uncomfortable but if you offer a brief phrase, look at them as you say the words.
- While walking in from the parking lot.

Metacognition is seriously under-rated.

Entrepreneurs often achieve through action.
Ideas in case words aren’t the easiest thing.
Actions you might consider:
Get them moving. Get them thinking about something else.
- Help them focus on work as a business need but also to help them through this difficult time. Offer a 15 minute planning session or daily planning session.
- Hey, can you help me with this?
- I need a fresh perspective. What’s your thought on this?
- Did you notice the sky today? Those clouds are amazing.
- Come see. That blue is like a Simpson’s sky! So beautiful!
- Get them to look out a window and really notice what’s out there.
- Suggest googling Emilie Leyes and how she turns negative happenings around to work for her.
How to find Emilie: https://www.emilieleyes.com/
*I don’t know her, I am personally inspired by her approach and therefore recommend her ALL the time.
- “Inspire them to get out and look up. “Did you notice the coneflowers bloomed in front of that guy’s shop? I try to walk out there every day just to see a bit of nature in action.”
- Put a flower or new plant in the office to inspire growth and better days ahead.
- A drink from a local convenience store. Hot or cold? Do you want this, that, or is it up to me?
- Your next coffee is on me. (and leave a gift card or send $ to their app)
- It’s national whatever day – bring it in or celebrate it in some small way.
“All you need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.” ~ Charles M. Schulz
- ANY day is almost their birthday, so bring a slice of cake (or a salad) and say it’s to celebrate a brighter tomorrow
- If they ask for help with work, offer suggestions and solutions. Help to put those in place, but be sensitive and do not tell them what to do unless they specifically ask.
Give them a positive potato.
….and watch them smile.
Entrepreneurs are not usually at a loss for words, but sometimes life is overwhelming. Sometimes we are overworked and need to slow down and accept a few new ideas. Sometimes it’s just an experience we haven’t dealt with before and we need suggestions too.
It isn’t always easy. You are typically optimistic, I know. But the strongest people also have vulnerabilities and weaknesses. They also have boundaries we work within. It’s important to put them first and consider different ways to make the difference for someone else.
Regardless – you are now armed with perspective, wisdom, and supportive words to make your own.
You got this.
